The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Real people say U-R-L. It's the computer and internet geeks who say "earl."
Therefore, I think you should write "a URL" and never "an URL". (Reminds me
of the years long debate on whether it's "an SQL database" or a "SQL
database," but let's not re-open that discussion.)
Also, "internet address" is no substitute for URL. david -at- knopf -dot- com could be
seen as an Internet address, but it's definitely not a URL.
