Not necessarily. Until relatively recently, General Electric was the major employer in Schenectady, NY. My uncle, who is from all over the country noticed that around Schenectady, some people tend to refer to _The GE_. I even catch myself doing it. So it could just be a regional thing.
Incidentally, since they moved a bunch more jobs out of the area, Schenectadians tend to refer to it as _The %)#&@!* GE_.
