TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Not only does it cost money to provide your own office, computer, and
all that, it saves the client from having to provide these things. The
money and time you save commuting may be important to you, but is
irrelevant to the client. The day care should be irrelevant unless your
kids can really take care of themselves in your home and you can work
without distraction.
If the work is better done onsite, then the client can specify that. If
the work can be done offsite, then you charge a higher rate and justify
it by the savings the client realizes as a result. Which is better
depends on the case.
