TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Are these jobs going begging because there are no tech writers
available? Or is it because the jobs do not pay sufficiently well for
one to live comfortably in that area?
Here in Las Vegas, the pay scale isn't anything to brag about, but it is
enough to live in tolerable comfort without having to commute more than
ten or twelve miles.
The last job I investigated in California paid more money, but the cost
of housing ruled it out. I will not physically commute 100+ miles
one-way to work.
My $0.02

I sympathize with Ruth Glasser's comments about hiring engineers and
tech
writers. Cliches such as the scarcity of teeth in a chicken come to
mind. I'm
told by reliable sources that, for experienced people, there are
approximately
100,000 jobs going unfilled here in Silicon Valley.
