I disagree. Often, the hiring manager will receive
the resume but *not* the cover letter, while the
cover letter stays in Human Resources. When you
have a stack of resumes to wade through because
you're looking to fill a specific job, you want to
know *right now* which type of position each
person is looking for.
Theoretical example: You're looking for an editor.
Thanks to a recent job fair, you have a stack of
resumes an inch thick. Do you really want to have
to read through each resume to find out which
people are looking for an editor's position rather
than a writer's position???
