Thanks to everybody who responded on my mouse problem.
Laura Beckman hit upon a good solution when she suggested I tweak my mouse properties. I reset the pointer speed to max, and that helped immensely (Control Panel>Mouse>Motion>Pointer Speed). No more sticky pointer!
My apologies to anyone who considered my post off topic.
