The company I used to work for referred to pre-GUI systems, as the "Character-based Version" of the software.

I've gotten a few responses on the GUI problem suggesting
that we drop the reference entirely. That would be my vote, too,
but we still have the old dinosaur program around (the non-GUI
programs). We somehow need to differentiate between the two
versions. Yikes!
