The red X is a bug (one of the many), it has nothing to do with the way
you insert or paste an image. The only way to get rid of this annoyance
is to install the Service release pack (Srv1off97.exe). This will get
rid of several bugs in Office '97.
But not all as Microsoft found out, so they released a patch for the
service release (now that's service!); called the sr1offup.exe.
Installing both of them will remove most bugs Microsoft knows about (or
acknowledges).
You can download both from their site, if you can't find them, I could
mail them to you.
Greetings,
Jeroen Hendrix
