Funny you should mention this. I used to work for Sterling Software several
years ago. And I was laid off by Sterling Software on a beautiful Friday
afternoon, ......for business reasons. Nothing personal, my supervisor told
me. He was very satisfied with my work. Just a business reorganization.
I was working originally for a small company - Asyst Technologies, which was
bought out by Sterling Software, much like Synon was bought out. At first,
they told us nothing would change, especially not the R & D Dept. here in
Montreal. After all, the only reason Sterling had bought us out was to
benefit from the product that Asyst was developing, and that I was
documenting. So why get rid of us who knew the product better than anyone on
earth? Well it happened.
I found that working for a giant lke Sterling Software has its good sides
(more influx of money, bigger parties, a feeling of security (?), etc.), but
it has its downside. You don't know who your superiors are any more. Nothing
is decided in your office any more. Everything is "policy". And to change a
"policy" is unheard of. Or else it takes years to change. And when decisions
are made, it always comes from "higher up". So you can't really blame anyone
except "corporate policies".
