Thanks for the post, Bob. For those who don't want to wade through the
web site just now, here's the section to which Bob was referring:
Critical Function: Generate and maintain documents and information
Key Activity: Gather data
Performance Indicators
Stakeholders are identified and queried for input on gathering
data, and method or application selected for gathering data meets their
needs.
Research sources are documented.
Accuracy of information is confirmed and errors or discrepancies
are resolved.
Key Activity: Draft, review, and finalize documents and
information
Performance Indicators
Document/information is accurate, clear, and concise.
Document/information is available on time.
The style and format of the document/information conforms to
customer requirements.
Key Activity: Duplicate and distribute documents and information
Performance Indicators
Security and confidentiality of information is maintained.
Duplicated material is formatted, collated, and distributed
correctly.
Duplication and distribution method is appropriate and
cost-effective.
Key Activity: Establish and maintain document and information storage
and retrieval system
Performance Indicators
Storage systems are easily accessible.
Information/documents are stored in a timely manner.
Appropriate backup plans are in place.
=============
That's a minimalist document if I ever saw one. (Hmmm, have I ever seen
one?) The part about the information storage and retrieval system is
particularly indicative; I guess MSBACKUP would be a sufficient document
management system for the high-tech industry.
But the key is found, I think, in the subtitle on the main page:
"Solving the Worker Shortage Problem." If you want more people to be
able to qualify for a certain job, one answer is to lower the hiring
standards. And I'd bet that lots of pointy-haired managers spent lots
of time in lots of meetings developing these standards.
