I can't help you with the PDF Writer problem -- I gave PDF Writer the
boot long ago -- but are you aware of Distiller's "Watched Folders"
option? You just output your .ps file to that folder and Distiller does
its thing unassisted. Prevents the tedium and saves a lot of time when
you have a lot to release.
