I think one of the reasons that many are always "looking" is because of
the volatility in the high tech industry, which can leave you feeling
insecure all the time. This may not be a bad thing. Why?
High tech firms are starting up and going out of business every day. I
would bet that most of the existing high tech firms were born after the
last recession and, despite a growing economy that has a lot of other
companies making record profits, many are losing their shirts. What will
it be like when the next recession comes?
I agree that "cradle to grave" employment is a thing of the past. If you
keep in mind that the odds are against you in having a long career where
you are, it won't come as such a shock when one day you find yourself
having to look for other work.
