Another option that may work well when the steps are short is to repeat
all five steps on each page (in a column or frame), and just highlight the
step for that page. This works like a navigation pane does for online
documents, keeping the reader oriented as to where he or she currently is
in the process and what is comming next. To really give it a
computer-interface feel, try printing the non-applicable steps on each
page in grey instead of black type.
