TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I think the sportswriting metaphor is off-base. Or maybe out of bounds.
Newspapers ship on time. If your front page stinks, tough. The presses
have to start turning at a particular time, or the whole delivery mechanism
breaks down. The subscribers expect their newspaper to land in a puddle at
the same time every day. If it doesn't, they're going to cancel their
subscriptions.
In high-tech, though, things rarely ship on time or within spec. One would
think that this would make things easier, but it doesn't.
