Hi all,
I think a lot of people here, in the course of waxing poetic about the
profession and how only true believers should be allowed to participate
(or how we should welcome everyone), are missing the *real* threat.
The real threat is *not* inexperienced people who want to be tech
writers for whatever reason. The real threat is the doofus managers who
will hire them because they are cheaper than their more experienced
counterparts, without regard to any difference in competence. The
inexperienced writers will not be hired if good technical writing is
valued, just as people who have taught themselves Visual Basic and
written a couple of programs for home use are rarely if ever hired as
commercial software developers.
It ain't the writer wannabes who have the power to deprive you of good
jobs, folks. It's ignorant management, and/or management that doesn't
see value in good technical documentation. We should be equally (or
more) concerned about getting *those* people trained -- if it's possible
for *them* to learn! ;-> (Sorry, maybe I've been reading too many
Dilbert strips, but I'm just in that kind of mood today.)
Good luck trying to train 'em -- it isn't for the faint of heart.
