Subject:Best hardware config for technical writers From:"Baptista, Marta" <MBaptista -at- PRIME-RESPONSE -dot- COM> Date:Tue, 6 Oct 1998 14:41:50 +0100
Dear all,
I've subscribed to your list today and am waiting for the first digest(ed)
mail from it. In the meantime, we have a question.
I wonder if you could help me. We are a 4-person group of technical writers
and we are being offered the chance to upgrade our hardware setup.
Our question is: Would any of you know what the ideal setup may be in terms
of everything: monitor size, memory, cpu, HD capacity, SCSI vs. EIDE, even
PC vs. Mac.
At the moment, we have a pentium 266 PC, 128 MB memory and 4.3 Gb HD. We use
Robohelp for help files, MS Office for ordinary work (Word mostly),
Paintshop ProAdobe Exchange, Photoshop, and Frame Maker as our main work
tools, all running on NT 4. Obviously, we have a wealth of other applets to
help us with our jobs.
We've been experiencing problems with Word, Frame Maker adn Robohelp alike,
in that the PC slows down to almost a halt when we are compiling (RH) /
repaginating (Word) or converting from format to another (e.g. FM from *.fm
to *.doc).
I do apologise if this is not the right list to ask about this. If it isn't
but some of you would like to share their experience with us, please feel
free to contact me direct.
I thank you in advance.
