To which I say a hearty amen. Until the standard computer monitor is
at least 8.5X11 inches in portrait mode (vertical) and has 300 dpi

for a "one size fits all" approach.

OK! Hold it right there!
[US Letter] 8,5 x 11 inches (or 215.9 x 279.4 mm) is OK for the USA in
1998. For the rest of the world it needs to be A4 (209.9 x 297.0 mm),
which is taller and narrower.
If you ensure that anything you publish will fit either format, e.g. the
smaller height and width of the two sizes (which would be 209.9 x 279.4 mm)
then *all* of us can print it.
Otherwise you are not looking beyond meeting just your needs when you
publish...
