As far as I know, there is not a single lexicon. Every
graphic designer, information visualizer, data-presenter,
and scientific diagrammer develops their own specific ways
of presentation. (It can be done however. For example:
cartography, meteorology, and radiology have standardized
their ways of presenting data.)

I would look at:
Robert L. Harris. 'Information graphics. A comprehensive
illustrated reference. Visual tools for analyzing,
managing and communicating.'
1996. Atlanta: Management graphics.
to get an impression, and than choose a method of presentation
that is suitable.

There are also national (BS, DIN) and international standards
(ISO) for some specific presentations, but these only suggest a
single approach, without relating this approach to the
interpretation of visual presentation by people/users. In most
cases, these are therefore not very appropriate.
