Weirdest consulting gig (OK, top THIS!)

A colleague of mine tells of a techical writing assignment he went on wherein
the boss - having bawled him out for showing up 'late' (from a doctor's
appointment he'd already informed someone else about) - called him into her
office and blithely explained that he wasn't there to write at all but to
gather information on the other (staff) writer so that the boss could justify
firing her (presumably to the home office, on the other side of the country.)

He quietly responded that he obviously couldn't work there, picked up the
phone and explained to his consulting company - in front of the client - why
he had to leave. Then, as he did so, the client called out to him -"OK, never
mind, you won't have to do that! But stay!! Please stay!!"

TW as (temporary) company spy - does it get any weirder?
