You'll get a lot of different opinions, but I always think of
"logging in" to a software system and "logging on" to a hardware
system. There are no hard and fast rules. It's probably a
matter of personal preference and house style. Your choice is
often affected by the UI, if it's already in place.

Both terms, "login" and "logon," are nouns (as in "Enter your
login and password"). The verb forms are "log in" and "log on"
(as in "Log on to AOL and see what's new" or "Log in to SourceSafe
and see what's old").
