Why does the certification need to be industry based? Why not try
something a little more fundamental, a little more academic. Test on
generic concepts. Test modes of writing not forms. We know different
genres have different audiences, but a person could be tested on their
ability to correctly perform an audience analysis. The cannons of
Rhetoric are still a valuable source of information. A user manual and
a brochure may not be the same thing, but design elements laid out in
the cannons and subsequent books are used in both.
(but what do I know, I'm just an editor)
