Look, I don't diss FrameMaker every time I help somebody; I think your
snarky comments are gratuitous. Both programs have drawbacks and
advantages, and there's just as little point in program wars as in
platform wars.
Your comments are also misleading. What you suggest is indeed a long
and convoluted process, and it doesn't create a dynamic reference. On
the other hand, if you use the STYLEREF field code, the whole thing
can be accomplished simply and dynamically.
It's not the fault of Word if you're not taking advantage of features
that do exist.
