HTML testing: browser defaults & slow download emulation

I'm testing HTML pages using IE4.0 and Netscape 4.3 which are
installed on my local PC. I have in the course of time reset
many of the view settings, such as fonts (colours, sizes,
faces), link underlining, etc.

I suppose most users do not touch these settings, so I'd like
to be able to view my pages with the default client
renderings. Unfortunately, in most cases there is no "reset to
default" button. HomeSite can display the page in an external
browser, but it uses the personalized settings.

Anyone know where I can get a list of the default settings for
each browser to save me reinstalling? Anyone have any reliable
statistics on what browsers are used and what, if any,
deviations from the default settings are common?

E.g., my customizations including getting rid of link
underlining (easier to read) and setting link colours darker
(less Xmas tree) but setting the hover colour to "red" so I
know where I'm at. I also set the proportional font to Verdana
small (I have a 21in monitor). I wonder how typical this is?

On a related note, does anyone know how to emulate a page
loading on a slow (14400) connection? I know HomeSite has
download time properties, but I want to see how it would
*look* while loading.

Happy New Year to all,
John Cornellier (I didn't want to be a tech writer anyway. I
wanted to be a lumberjack! Leaping from tree to tree...)
