I consider myself on shaky ground here, but I think what's going on in general
is that, since not all browsers -- not all computers, for that matter -- can
handle all types of data sent to them, your software may be deliberately
converting data that's less likely to be understood on some computers to data
that's more likely to be understood. In fact, I remember an issue that came
up with someone using a non-standard character set. I was in a chat room, and
one person's messages were coming out as gibberish on my computer. It turned
out that it was because the person was using non-standard characters. I
suspect the conversion you're dealing with is there to prevent a similar
problem.
