I don't have a specific answer to this question, but would like to recommend
a n excellent resource: Encyclopedia of Graphics File Formats, James D.
Murray and William Van Ryper, 1996, O'Reilly & Associates. It contains a
wealth of information about almost every aspect of understanding about and
working with all types of graphics files.
