PhotoShop and Illustrator are inherently different software for
different kinds of graphics. The former is for bitmaps, such as
photographs, and the latter for line art, such as CAD drawings or vector
artwork. In Windows, bitmaps commonly have the following extensions,
amongst others: bmp, pcx, gif, jpg. Vectors commonly have these
extensions: eps, ai, cdr, wmf, dxf.
I suspect you want a paint, or bitmap, application. If you are a novice
and unsure, consider buying CorelDRAW! from Corel Corporation.
CorelDRAW! is a suite of graphics software that includes a vector
application, CorelDRAW! itself, and a bitmap application, Corel
PhotoPaint. Corel can be buggy so be sure to download the latest patch.
Like Photoshop and Illustrator, the CorelDRAW! files can import a host
of formats.
Good luck.
