The newsgroup you were thinking of is alt.usage.english, which also has a
helpful (and long!) FAQ.

I'll second Geoff's recommendation of copyediting-l, which I subscribed to
after hearing about it from him. It's an exCELlent supplement to this list.
I never thought discussing usage could be so much fun . . .
