The position is for a first line manager of technical writers here
in Austin, TX. The company is Tivoli Systems, which is a subsidiary
of IBM and produces software for managing IT environments. Tivoli
employs about 3000 people worldwide and the IDD department in
Austin consists of about 30 writers.
First Line IDD (Information Design and Delivery) Manager
A position is available in the Information Development and Design
group in Austin for an enthusiastic, team oriented, creative thinker,
with demonstrated leadership abilities to manage up to 15 Information
Developers/Editors and help Tivoli grow into the future. The IDD
organization produces information, both hard copy and online, for
customers of Tivoli's software products.
Responsibilities:
Develop the IDD organization in conjunction with the other IDD
development sites in Raleigh, Indianapolis, Rome, Santa Clara, to:
· Design and produce product information in a variety of formats
including hardcopy and online.
· Recruit and retain outstanding Information Developers and Editors by
providing career paths, individual growth and development, and
supporting strong personal ownership at the product level of
customer-specific information.
· Build a cohesive, flexible team comprised of permanent and contract
personnel.
· Engage team to solicit customer-feedback on an on-going basis and
participate in the design and implementation of IDD deliverables
that meet or exceed customer expectations.
· Ensure thorough and appropriate information plans and schedules
are created and implemented.
· Ensure standard approach for content, design and structure of
hardcopy and online information is followed.
· Monitor and maintain work flow and communication between writers,
editors, translation teams, and production.
· Open well defined communication channels between IDD and other Tivoli
departments such as development, verification, education, customer
support, marketing and sales.
· Support IDD initiatives such as localization, appropriate tool
selection, appropriate customer focused information content and style
development.
· Assist in the development and implementation of processes to support
a worldwide release of products.
· Manage a budget.
· Prepare and deliver peer and upper management reporting.
Required Skills and Experience:
· Minimum of 7 years in technical communications field with at least
3 years in a technical lead or staff management role in a software
company.
· Proven understanding of the high tech software market and its
requirements.
· Strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written
communication skills.
· Experience managing teams with multiple products/projects delivery
responsibilities.
· Strong project management skills to manage aggressive product
schedules and balance resources.
· Demonstrated people management skills including conflict management
and the ability to encourage/grow the people working in the
department.
· Strong technical background.
Recommended Experience:
· Demonstrated ability to work in an environment with a
cross-departmental, cross-site focus.
· Demonstrated understanding of or experience in software development
processes.
Education Required:
· Appropriate university degree (for example, Communication,
Computer Science, Languages, Journalism) or equivalent experience.
