I consider a dialog box to be a window where an action is required to
move on, something like the Windows OPEN or SAVE AS boxes. The action
will be limited, and it appears above the application, usually prodding
you on. Another example is when you close a doc, and Word asked you if
you want to save. You can't move on until you either answer its question
or close/cancel.
I consider a screen to be an application screen where you perform a task
or fill out a form, and once you have completed the actions/form, you
are moved to the next screen. You don't have to close it to move on.
Microsoft Access forms are a good example.
I consider a window to be something that opens and remains open, unless
you physically close it--allowing you to toggle between windows. Like
having two docs open. (BTW, Microsoft discourages the use of the word
"window", presumably to protect their trademark from becoming another
"aspirin".)
It will be interesting to see what others have to say.
