Subject:advice for prospective tech writer From:Sirinya Laiteera <sirinya16 -at- YAHOO -dot- COM> Date:Mon, 29 Mar 1999 21:51:42 -0800
Hello,
I am a recent mechanical engineering graduate who
is interested in pursuing technical writing work
and a career in technical writing. I am attracted
to technical writing because I feel that it
could be a very personally rewarding and challenging
career.
I have many questions about a technical writing
career because of my lack of experience and exposure.
Some of my questions include:
Salary- how much can I expect as an entry-level tech
writer with no experience? Is technical writing
a lucrative profession?
Current demand for tech writers- Are tech writers
valued by organizations and are they a needed resource
in organizations? What is the supply of tech writers
in relation to the market demand for tech writer?
How competitive is it to find a tech writing position?
Work Stability- Is there much opportunity for long-term
work in an organization or is it more realistic to
be working contract or temporary tech writing work?
Developing experience- What criteria should I use
in choosing a tech writing job? Should I be willing
to accept any reasonable tech writing job for the
benefit of experience? What kinds of positions
should I be asking for, considering I have no
background but a good technical background and written
skills?
I do have many questions and many more. Any advice
or information about one's opinions or experiences
would be greatly appreciated.
