It appears that you expect contracting to be both easier and more
profitable than working as an employee. Most independents, whether tech
writers or other private entrepreneurs work longer and harder than most
employees.

From what you've written, I wouldn't be surprised if your work ethic and/or
professional abilities were at fault.
