Leona,
You are not going to like this: the red X syndrome is a bug in Word 97.
Your graphics are gone, and they must be re-inserted.
Before you begin your arduous task, might I suggest
(a) get the Service Release from MS that fixes this bug
(b) beg for a backup from your IT folks
(c) switch to FrameMaker if possible!
