Deborah,
It sounds as if you have used a field (like a TOC field) to create the
list of APIs and then you sort it. Each time you update the field, it
reverts to its normal sequence.
You can check if this is so by turning field shading on.
You have to unlink the field (CTRL+SHIFT+F9.) to make it into normal text
before you sort it.
If you later need to update it, you'll need to reinsert the field, unlink it
and sort again.
