While I am the first one to stay late if there is something that I need to
get done, I will not stay just for "face time". I consistently meet my
deadlines. I do good work. I can usually get my job done in 40 hours. >> snip
I know what you mean. I, too, work for a company that takes that attitude and I bought into their mentality for a while. It went to the extent that regularly around 5:00 p.m., people dumped work on my desk that they wanted finished that day. And there I was until 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. sometimes working away, while most people started to leave around 6:00 p.m., including those people who dumped the work on my desk. From this experience, I learned a few things:
1. If do not learn to say no to unreasonable requests, people will take advantage of you.
2. Regardless of your skills and hard work you still do not have a guaranteed job.
3. What if the company lays you off, where does that leave you after sacrificing your personal life?
I solved the problem by coming into the office later and saying no to unreasonable requests and leaving about the same time other people leave, unless I am working on an important deadline. That way, you avoid the looks and it may also help you with your reviews.
Well that's my opinion and it has served me well.
