Does anyone have
recommendations for a good laptop, e.g., keyboard that doesn't squish
your elbows together, good, good screen, etc?

My work machine is a Dell Latitude CPi, using a docking station and a 21"
monitor at my usual worksite. It's okay. A friend in the illustration
business uses a Sony VAIO, which is at least as good and considerably
cheaper. The best laptop IME is about as good as a mediocre
desktop--they're generally slower, tend toward instability when pushed
hard, and often have problems with peripherals. Bad or obsolete drivers for
the various PCMCIA cards are common, necessitating downloads from the
manufacturer's site, even with a brand-new computer.
