I've noticed a couple mentions of the upcoming Region 7 STC Conference. As a
member of the team putting it together, I thought I'd talk it up a bit.

It is going to be a great conference. We got a flood of great submissions in
our call for papers and the other conference events are useful, informative

Region 7 Conference - Still Writing After All These Years
With all the attention given to new media and technologies, it's easy to
forget that certain competencies are at the core of technical communication.
No matter the medium, our skills for designing information, crafting text,
and producing materials will always serve us will in developing high-quality
communications. Yes, we're still writing after all these years... while
expanding our knowledge and skills with the latest techniques for visual
design, multimedia, Web, online help and training, video, and more.

The 1999 STC Region 7 conference will help us sharpen our basic skills and
learn about the technologies and issues that are fast becoming an essential
part of our experience.

Let the STC Region 7 Conference help you strengthen your core expertise

The Region 7 Conference, hosted by the STC Puget Sound Chapter, will be held
October 14 - 16, 1999, at the DoubleTree in Bellevue, Washington.  Entitled
"Still Writing After All These Years: Redefining the Core Competencies of
Technical Communication," the Region 7 Conference approaches its theme from
the standpoint of the basic communication principles you already know.  Two
full days of Conference presentations are organized into Toolbox Topics
addressing work skills, management practices and technologies in the new
digital medium.
Keynote Speaker
Roger C. Parker, author of the influential Looking Good in Print: A Guide to
Basic Design for Desktop Publishing, is the conference keynote speaker. He
has more than 1.5 million copies of his books in print in more than 37
languages. Parker's Looking Good in Print has been called one of the ten
most influential computer books of all time. He has published over 150
articles in magazines such as Home Office Computing, Newsletter Design,
Technique, and Corel Magazine. In addition, Parker has developed curriculum
and conducted over 175 day-long desktop publishing design seminars
throughout the United States and Australia.

Parker has also prepared numerous features for the Microsoft SmallBiz Web
site plus dozens of tutorials, "how-to" features and templates for Microsoft
Office, Publisher, and Works Web sites. He prepared a strategic outline and
content for Tektronix Corporation's Colorize Web site, as well as serving as
a monthly contributor to several other Web sites. His consulting clients
include Adobe, Agfa, Apple Computer, Bose, Goldmark, Hewlett-Packard,
Lexmark, Microsoft, Paper Direct, Puget Sound Business Directory, State
Street Bank, Seiko Tandberg, Union Mutual Insurance, Volvo, and Yamaha.
Other Conference Highlights

Registration rates include continental breakfast and lunch for Friday and
Saturday, along with a copy of the proceedings on CD-ROM. Registration after
September 24 (including walk-in) will not include meals.
Chapter Leaders Workshop

On Sunday, October 17 there will be a post-conference workshop starting at
8:30 a.m. There is a separate $20 fee for this event. This workshop is open
to anyone interested in learning more about STC, the status of the technical
communication profession, or the principles and practices of leadership in
all aspects of our lives. Topics to be covered include:
*       Update on STC services and projects
*       Free-for-all on issues and concerns relating to STC and the
profession
*       Leadership in our business, volunteer, and personal lives
Post Conference Activities
A trip to the Museum of Flight <http://www.museumofflight.org> is planned
for Sunday, October 17. Admission is $8/person at the door, and
transportation from the hotel is provided. The Museum of Flight features
dozens of full-size aircraft flying in formation six stories above. The
Blackbird spy plane and America's first presidential jet, the original Air
Force One, are on display. Come experience the story of flight from the dawn
of aviation to the Space Age.
