There's definitely more freedom involved when you freelance. You can set
your own hours (within reason), you get more responsibility, sometimes you
get more creative leeway with the documentation, and the money tends to be
better.
However, there's a price to be paid for all that. Sometimes there are dry
spells when you're out of work, and no work means no money. You have to deal
with the government more intensely for income and sales taxes. It can be
lonely too, especially if you work with one great bunch of people for a
while and then your next contract has nothing but boobs.
BTW, if you take a month's vacation, that means you don't get paid for a
month! The money runs out faster than you can imagine!
I've been freelancing for over 4 years now and I'm starting to consider
going back to being a full-timer, just because the administrative hassles
are getting me down.
But if you can live with the risks involved in being a freelancer, I'd say
it's a fun life. I know it's going to be tough for me to go back to the
full-time life. <g>
