Sean Brierley asked:

One of the main books on the use of white space is:
James Hartley: Designing Instructional Text (3rd edition) 1994
East brunswick (NJ): Nichols Publishing. ISBN 0 89397 399 8
London: Kogan Page Ltd. ISBN 0 7494 1037 X
Specifications for paragraph length, column size and other design elements
are strongly related to the document-type (genre). 'Design rules' that
claim to apply to all genres should be mistrusted and can in most cases
safely be ignored.
Kind regards,
Karel van der Waarde
