Hi John,
I agree with you 100% about master document. Fortunately, there is a
work around. You can create a separate TOC document. You place field
codes in the document that indicate which documents you wish to reference.
To do this, perform the following steps:
1. In Word, create a new file. When you create the file, you probably
want to make sure it is in the same directory as your other files -- this
makes it much easier in the long run because you don't have to worry about
absolute pathnames in case you move the files.
2. From the Insert pull-down menu, select Field.
3. Select Index and Tables from the Categories Column.
4. Select RD from the Field Names column.
5. RD should appear in the text box (located beneath the Categories and
Field Names columns. Type in the name of the first file you wish to
reference (if your ten files are chapter1.doc, chapter2.doc etc., type
chapter1.doc).
6. Click the OK button. The field code with the filename should appear.
(If it doesn't, you might need to turn on the field codes -- under the
tools menu, select options and click the view tab. There is a checkbox
for field codes.)
7. You can either repeat steps 3-6 for each new file you wish to add, or
simply copy, paste and modify the existing field codes. (I like the
latter!) Just make sure they are in the order they should appear in the
table of contents.
8. Run the table of contents as you would normally. (Select Index and
Tables from the Insert pull-down menu and click the Table of Contents
tab.)
9. If you receive an error reference not found message, check the
field codes and make sure you have the correct file name specified. If
this doesn't help, you might want to try opening up the first file
referenced and then try to run it again. (This works for me!)
