The comments about disabling fast saves is a good one.
Fast saves (I believe) appends your edits to the doc which can't help but to
make the file bigger. You can force Word to incorporate the changes and
remove the appendages by using the Save As command instead of the Save
command.
Another thing to check is whether changes are being tracked. If so, deleted
text and graphics aren't really deleted, they're just hidden.
