TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've been assured that technical writing is not going the way of the
Edsel by many persons in high tech. Of course, nobody foresaw the
failure of the Edsel, either.
My response:
I agree that many folks don't understand why it takes so long to get
such simple, clear documentation; however, they DO notice when a good
writer is replaced by a bad one (or a difficult one). So, I don't
think we're going the down the Edsel route -- at least, not yet. It is
unfortunate that our true value isn't apparent until we leave, though.
