TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Dan's post got me thinking. Even more important than looking at their writing 'under the hood' you've got to find out what type of person you're getting.
I've found that asking questions regarding problems people encountered, what they thought caused those problems, how they tried to solve them, and what they did to prevent future problems, revealed a lot of about people. (Often way more than I wanted to know!)
If you shut up and let people talk, those types who are 'part of the problem, not part of the solution' think they have a sympathetic ear and will spill their guts complaining about how unfair life is. The middle-of-the-road people will be so careful to get the question right that they won't say much of anything. And the potentially great employees will share all kinds of interesting and innovative ideas with you.
Can't wait to use those skills again - someday. :(
