TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I am an employer. I can tell you that there is no legal requirement for
originals in most companies (unless there is some security issue), but that
if the company requires anything from one potential employee, they are
required by law to ask it of every potential employee. Otherwise, they are
setting themselves up for a class action law suit.
However, the question you asked is should your friend "go for" this offer.
That's up to him. These documents are important enough, and most company
bureaucracies are messed up enough that if it were me, I'd keep looking. But
it's entirely up to him. What's the worst that can come of it if his
originals are lost? What's the best that can happen when taking a job with a
company that is making this kind of demand? Is it worth it to your friend?
Good luck!
