Re: Where's the beginning? (was RE: When to Spell Out Acronyms)
Let me throw an idea out there, thought it may not be directly
supported by the HATs. What about providing alt text for acronyms
(using the TITLE attribute in a null link)? The user can float over
the acronym to have the spelled out version displayed in fly-over
text.
Congratulations. You have just reinvented the <acronym> tag, part of the HTML standard since 1997.
Pros of the acronym tag:
+ Need to use null links, which wreak havok with accessibility
+ Supported as tooltips in all browsers
+ Can be CSS-styled.
Cons:
+ browsers support them in different ways. Mozilla/Firefox underlines them with a light dotted underline, which can lead to underline pollution on the page if you have a lot of acronyms. IE doesn't underline or indicate that the acronym is special at all. Styling can fix this.
+ It can be maintenance nightmare to tag all your acronyms depending on your HAT.
Cheers,
Laura
