This is the correct approach. It is a shared responsibility, and anything that begins to look like an "edit war" should immediately be escalated or brought into the organization's scheme for arbitration.

Stupid, one-sided changes may result in a product that's not fit for use. I remind myself of the bitter discovery, in the books freshly back from the printer, that an editor had changed the capitalization in the examples of a computer language that distinguished upper and lower case. This is the underlying fear: "If you change anything you'll make it wrong."

Let them add it. Make sure you, and/or other editors, get notifications and clean them up as you are able. Always notify the OP of any significant changes, and ask for their approval or help.
