I just saw a Ricoh 6010 color copier/printer demonstrated yesterday (it had an internal Fiery RIP). One of the tests I ran was to collate multiple copies from a PDF, using nothing but Acrobat Reader (although now that I think about it, I'm not sure I verifed it was Acrobat 4--oops). It worked fine, after setting the printer properties correctly. This was a model without a collator/sorter output bin, by the way.
So now I'm having second thoughts about my hypothesis the other day. Maybe it really is the drivers that the printer manufacturers ship where the relevant controls get implemented, and maybe Adobe really can't do anything about it. So I guess it's time to call HP and Xerox, rather than Adobe, on this issue.
