Re: What, Me Think? (was RE: clarification needed)
.... Isn't it more inportant to know how to find the answers ... instead of memorizing the dates? ....
... the easy way out (i.e a research paper that regurgitates information) ....
- A real research paper doesn't just list existing information, but synthesizes a new idea based on it.
- Because memorization has been misused in the past does not mean it should be entirely abandoned.
- If you know the dates, when you learn a new fact you can say to yourself things like, "Say, wasn't that the year the English press became free? I wonder if that had anything to do with it." At that point you look into it further, and if you find out it did have something to do with it, you feel gratified that you figured it out; if it becomes clear that there's a connection, but nobody's pointed it out in print, then Ha! You can publish! Or at least impress your friends.
- In the long run, single bits of information are only a fraction as useful as complex and deep patterns of information. This applies to technical writing as well as to any craft.
- So-called "intuition," which is really unconscious pattern recognition and logic, requires its raw materials (facts) to be on hand--that is, in your head. Your unconscious can't get online while you sleep and look things up, much less drive over to the public library.
