Yes, tech writers are a well-paid lot!
Well, they certainly should be!
I design systems/applications, and much prefer to write my own help modules, booklets, etc. However, most developers loathe this sort of thing.
But to be able to write GOOD, clear, accurate information about software you haven't written, using languages/utilities with which you weren't previously familiar seems absolutely awesome.
