TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I'd like to see this question posed with choices for size of team, or other
team aspects. There are so many nuances; it's hard for me to answer this in
black and white -- alone vs. part of "a team."
Personally, I like very small teams, with each person handling his own large
chunk of the project (e.g., one person does the online help, one person does
the sys admin manual, one person does the user's manual) -- as opposed to
splitting up the same piece into several splintered pieces (e.g., three
people developing one end-user-oriented online help system). I'd rather work
alone than split a one-man project with two other people.
Of course, that's based on my experience with projects of a certain size. I
imagine that some products are so gigantic that you might want (or need) to
divvy up a single part of the project. I've never worked on anything quite
so huge that it necessitated that approach. I'd rather be more of a
generalist than a specialist, so I probably would not choose to work for a
company that demands that single project pieces be splintered.
