For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.

But largely the Business Development types don't turn to technical writers for
help with the proposals, thinking that tech writers don't know how to do this
type of work. Would they but ask! Sometimes, of course, tech writers get called
in to help draft proposals, and here the research and outlining skills really
can shine.

There are a lot of resources, including a guide to writing book proposals, on my
agent's web site: www.waterside.com (click For New Authors, then click Book
Proposals). Waterside has placed thousands of computer books (including the 30+
of mine) and holds an annual conference near San Diego for book publishing
people and authors (and wannabe authors). The web site periodically carries a
"most wanted" list of titles and/or subjects that the publishers consider hot.
Since Waterside makes its money from successfully placing authors with
publishers, I would trust their guidelines.
